Surendranath law college History
Surendranath Law College initially called the Presidency School in 1882, the institution was taken over by Sri Surendranath Banerjee on January 1, 1884. That year, it expanded its Post-Graduate Department of Law and became affiliated with Calcutta University as an independent professional college in 1885. Banerjee renamed it Presidency Institution, upgrading it to a college meeting the F.A. standard and later renaming it Ripon College after the British Viceroy George Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon. In 1949, it was renamed again in honor of its founder, Sri Surendranath Banerjee.
The college's women's section was established in 1931 by Mira Datta Gupta. Swami Vivekananda gave his first Calcutta address here after his famed speech at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893. In 1911, Rabindranath Tagore presented one of his essays on national integration at the college. Recognized by the University Grants Commission in 1972, the college now offers LLM courses.
